Quick & Simple Burnt-In Effect

Start by finding a texture you want to use as your base, for this tutorial I just used a free texture I found on Design Reviver (link). Get the texture and resize it if you like. Now put some text or a shape onto your canvas.

Wood Texture Added - Text Added

If you want to use the same font as what I’ve used above, you can download the “Pointy” font for free from FontSpace. You just want to be sure not to use black as your text color, use a dark brown, or dark color from the texture you’ve used underneath (#2d1406).

After you’ve done this, select a layer mode from the top section of layer modes, I found Linear Burn, with a Fill of 60-70% works best though.

Layer Styles Changed

Now we can take this a little bit further, and make it a little bit more interesting-looking, or we can leave it as is. If you want to do a little bit more to it, right-click your layer in the layer’s palette and go into the Blending Options, click and apply the following settings/styles:

  1. Outer Glow
  2. Gradient Overlay

And now we have something like this:

Outer Glow and Gradient Overlay Added

That’s all! Try it with a shape, mess around with different settings and all, see what you can come up with!

Thanks for reading ;)
